The OVD market is expected to grow slightly throughout the forecast period. Demand for OVDs will be driven by the aging population and the associated need for refractive correction among this demographic. OVD use is directly correlated with IOL sales. In general, growth of the IOL market is driven by the increasing prevalence of cataracts, a condition that is associated with older age. Since standard monofocal IOLs are covered by most government health insurance overall IOL insertion rates do not depend on economic stability. Because of this, procedure rates should remain constant as should OVD use.
Whether a dispersive or cohesive OVD is used depends on both physician preference and the situation; however, both are similarly priced. Combination OVDs are being produced in an attempt to provide the advantages of both cohesive and dispersive OVDs and thus simplifying the procedure. Some physicians however do not see combination OVDs as an improvement and are not willing to pay the more premium price for them. Finally some companies also package an anesthetic mixed in with their OVD to further simplify things. Again, this is another premium that some physicians find unnecessary and would prefer to anesthetize separately.
Longer life expectancy and a shift towards an older average age among the European population will lead to increased incidences of cataracts. Because cataracts can lead to blindness, the surgery is considered essential. The changing demographics of the European population will therefore lead to an increase in the overall sales of IOLs. OVDs are required for IOL insertion surgeries and thus their sales will increase accordingly.,Ophthalmic viscosurgical devices (OVD) are viscoelastic solutions used in several eye surgeries. They are also referred to as viscoelastic agents. These fluids have had a great influence on both extracapsular and phacoemulsification surgeries and their use has decreased the incidence of corneal edema. The main task of the OVD is protecting the inner side of the cornea during surgery. It accomplishes this by maintaining a deep anterior chamber during anterior segment surgery. This space prevents contact with and possible damage to the endothelial cell layer on the inner side of the cornea and the surrounding ocular tissues. In addition OVDs help to push back the vitreous face in the event of a posterior capsule tear or a rent in the zonules all the while preventing formation of a flat chamber during surgery.
